FAST WORK
One of the speediest constructional projects carried out by the Allied Works Council in Australia is the erection in New South Wales of a £1,000,000 military hospital for the United States Army. Originally planned for completion in 20 weeks, the work was finished in half that time—a record in Australia. Nearly 1400 carpenters, plumbers, electricians, and other tradesmen worked at break-neck speed to complete the job on schedule. The work involved the erection of 500 separate buildings, over about 200 acres of land, on a site formerly occupied as a sports ground, and including an old farmhouse. The farmhouse had been occupied by three generations of one family for more than 70 years. The owner personally appealed to the U.S. Army authorities to spare the old home. They readily agreed.
