TADMOR WINS

FIRST TO REACH QUOTA STILL GOING STRONG Tadmor is the first district in the Nelson War Loan area to reach its quota.. Indeed, Tadmor has considerably exceeded it and is still going strong, the people being eager to make a record score in the Liberty Loan district contest. When the first weekly barometer was published Tadmor did not appear. However, it transpired that this was a district of silent but very effective workers who were shrewd enough campaigners not to disclose their tactics to the enemy. To-iay their total stands at £3213, the target being £2500. They are going further than this.

ARMY DISPLAY

ARMOURED VEHICLES AND GUNS IN NELSON Not only the übiquitous small boy, but his elder brother and his father, too, found plenty to occupy their attention yesterday afternoon when the display of armoured vehicles and artillery arranged in connection with the Liberty Loan Army Week were lined up in Trafalgar street. The envy of his fellows was the lad who gained the seat of honour on a 251 b Bofors anti-aircraft gun. Full of his importance he proudly manipulated any pieces of movable mechanism to demonstrate their working and gazed intently through the sights. Neither gentle persuasion nor pointed criticism from the others clustered round succeeded in ousting him from his post. Through loudspeakers, the public were invited to inspect the vehicles and weapons and to ask questions of the soldiers in charge. This invitation kept the drivers busy explaining queries of “What’s this for, Mister?” “How does this thing work?” “How fast can she go?” In addition to the Bofors gun. the display included two 181 b field guns, with gun limbers for ammunition, towed by squat but powerful-looking armoured scout cars. Bren gun carriers, with their caterpillar drives, were well clambered over by the boys who pried wth interest into all their mechanism. Last evening residents of Motueka and Riwaka had the opportunity of seeing some of these vehicles and weapons when the 251 b Bofors antiaircraft gun, a large general purpose vehicle for heavy towing, a Bren carrier and troop carriers made a brief tour of those districts.
