GENERAL ELECTIONS
APPEAL BY GENERAL SMUTS (Rec. 11.45) Johannesburg, June 23. General Smuts, Prime Minister, declared that the general election in South Africa on July 7th was in the nature of a referendum on th e war issue—the greatest episode in the history of mankind. He warned that every possible vote should be accorded the Government to show that South Africans were determined to prosecute the war until the freedom of mankind was assured. The JohanneXmrg correspondent of the Associated Press of Great Britain says German radio stations are urging South Africans to vote against the Smuts Government. Members of the Cabinet say this is impudent but natural in view of the gains for the Axis if General Smuts is defeated. —P.A.
