RECORD PRODUCTION FIGURES
FEW STOPPAGES OF WORK LAST YEAR (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) Wellington, This Day. There were 43 strikes in New Zealand last year compared with 111 the previous year, said the Minister of Labour. Mr P. C. Webb in the House of Representatives last night. But last year there were only six stoppages of work exceeding one day. If that time were spread over the whole country’s workers, the time lag was only a fraction of a minute per worker per year. Was there any country in the world which could boast of such a fine industrial record as that? That was a result of the co-operation and goodwill that had sent production in almost every field of industry up to record figures, in spite of the fact that thousands had been taken out of industry. The Minister praised the personnel of the Industrial Emergency Council, which consists of employers and workers representatives and said that in almost every case the council had extended working hours when extensions had been applied for.
