ROAD SERVICES SOLD
NORTH AUCKLAND ROUTES PURCHASE BY THE STATE Wbangarci, June 23. Two of the few remaining major North Auckland road passenger services retained in private hands have been acquired by the State. Hutley’s Motors, Limited, having sold the AucklandWliangarei and Awanui-Kaeo-Otiria services to New Zealand Road Services. Founded originally by Mr J. Hutley, senior, and later operated by his elder son, Mr A. Hutley, the firm est«ihlished the service via Whangaroa in 1926, first on a tri-weekly basis and latterly running a trip daily to the railhead. The Auckland-Whangarei license was purchased in 1935 from Pioneer Motors, but has been in suspense since 30th November last. Giving his reasons for disposing of the services, Mr Hutley said that the price offered in each instance was attractive and that existing shortages and restrictions made it increasingly difficult for private operators to continue on the road.
