SHOT THROUGH LUNG
ACCIDENT ON LAUNCH Suva, June 8. A young European serving in the Fiji military forces, Corporal V. Jacka, had a narrow escape from death near Sfuva on 30th May when he was shot through the lung at close range. The wounded man was one of a picnic party returning to Suva by launch. Another member of the party, a visiting officer, was practising with a revolver by shooting at a log floating in the water. Apparently, as he was about to fire, somebody bumped his arm, with the result that his aim was deflected and the bullet, struck Jacka, who was in the bow of the launch. The launch came on to Suva at top speed and Jacka was taken at once to a military hospital, where blood transfusions were given. For several days his condition was reported as serious, but thanks to good medical attention and a strong constitution he gradually pulled through, and is now reported to be making a good recovery.
