NELSON DISTRICT WAR LOAN CONTRIBUTION

COMMITTEE REVIEWS PROGRESS The Nelson district total in the third Liberty Loan had reached £241,050 by last night when the figure for the city was £181,550, it was announced at a general meeting of the loan committee last evening. The chairman, Mr C. Milner, commented that the returns to date were satisfactory but there was still a long way to go before the target of £550,000 was reached. The half-way mark had not yet been reached. The first part of a campaign was usually the easiest and most of the big amounts the committee knew of were already in. However, he felt confident that the target would be reached. Mr J. Agar reported that 32 addresses had been made to workers’ groups, the audiences totalling over 1000 people. Further groups would be addressed during the week. Valuable assistance had been given by Lieut. Birch, Sgt.Major Ovens and Sgt. Hume, V.C. Mr A. H. Crawley reported on the arrangement of window displays. The Bond Wagon had been in Nelson last Friday but its activities had been restricted by wet weather. The women responsible for the street sales and the sailors who had assisted had accomplished valuable work. Next week would be Air Force Week and it was hoped to have a procession through the city on Saturday morning, 3rd July. The cffairman also paid a tribute to the work of the women selling bonds on the streets. Mr H. G. B. Hurst reported on behalf of the advertising committee and Mr K. M. Black for the posters’ committee. It was announced that Mrs E. R. Neale, Mayoress of Nelson, would give this week’s radio talk and that the speaker next week would be Mr L. Ward, president of the Nelson Trades and Labour Council. On the next two Saturday nights the campaign committee would provide quarter-hour programmes in addition to the talks. The chairman moved a vote of thanks to the soldiers and sailors who had given valuable assistance to the committee.

Sgt. Hulme, V.C., gave a review of his visits to various country districts.
