FERRY TRAFFIC IN AUCKLAND
OVER 9.000,000 PASSENGERS FOR TEAR POSSIBLE USE OF RADIO BEAM SYSTEM Auckland. This Day. With a view to having the most scientific equipment at its command the Devonport Ferry Company is making close inquiries into the question of the introduction of the radio beam system and the company hopes before long to instal this modern means of safe navigation, to be used on the comparatively few occasions when vision on the Waitemata Harbour is limited by foggy conditions. This information was given to company shareholders to-day by the chairman of directors, Sir Ernest Davis, at the annual meeting. A record year in the transport across the harbour of passengers was experienced by the ferry company for the twelve months ended 30th April, said Sir Ernest Davis. A total of 9,432,225 passengers was carried, an increase of 973,831. Factors contributing to the increase were the long dry spell and restrictions on long distance transport, also the popularity of short holiday excursions. Men of the fighting services also helped to swell the total.—P.A
