OBITUARY
MR THOMAS BROWN DIRECTOR OF ANCHOR SHIPPING COMPANY The death of Mr Thomas Brown, a director of the Anchor Shipping and Foundry Co. Ltd-, occurred at his home in Richardson street, yesterday. Mr Brown, who was 72 years of age, was the eldest son of the late Mr Alexander Brown, one of the founders of the Anchor Company. He served his engineering apprenticeship in the companv’s foundry and then proceeded to England for further experience. For some years he was an engineer in the service of the Union Company, prior to succeeding his father as manager of the Anchor Company’s foundry. He retired from that position in 1920 and then acted as consulting engineer to the company. In 1922 and again in 1926, in company with Mrs Brown, he visited England on the company’s business. In 1922 he superintended the construction of the steamer Titoki on the Clyde, and when returning to New Zealand in 1926 he was a passenger on R.M-S. Aorangi on its maiden voyage. The late Mr Brown was appointed a director of the Anchor Shipping Company on its inception as a limited liability company in March 1901 and he retained that position until his death. He was a man held in high esteem as a citizen and in the engineering profession. He married Miss Helen Mcßitchie Simpson, who survives him. Mr A. I. Brown, superintendent engineer and a director of the Anchor Company is a brother. Flags on the Anchor Company’s offices were flown at half mast today as a mark of respect. MR EDSEL FORD New York, May 26. The death has occurred of Mr Edsel Ford, aged 49. Mr Edsel Bryant Ford was identified with his father, Mr Henry Ford, in the manufacture of automobiles and was president and treasurer of the Ford Motor Company.—P.A.
