PORT-TAHUNANUI ROAD
STRAIGHTENING AND WIDENING SUGGESTED An intimation that he intended to take steps to have the straightening of the Port Nelson Tahunanui road placed before the Rehabilitation Board for consideration as a suitable rehabilitation work after the war, was made by Mr J. A. Harley at last night’s meeting of the Nelson Automobile Association. Mr F. V. Powell referred to the difficulty motorists had at present in picking up the curves in the road on wet nights. For a considerable distance from the Tahtina side there was a steep camber from the centre of the road to the chains and this camber created a driving hazard, particularly to people who did not know the road well. Mr B. Bishop agreed that drivers had difficulty in picking up thp bends cn the road and he suggested That the painting of some of the iron posts along the roadside would give assistance. Captain W. R. Grace suggested that a white line along the centre of the road would give motorists a guide to their position on the road. Mr Harley: "The only way to overcome the driving and traffic difficulties between the port and Tahuna would be by the straightening of tbe road from near the Municipal power house to Tahunanui.”- He pointed out that the sea was getting in behind the blocks of stone in the sea wall in many places and so endangering the roadway. He intended to make a proposal that that work be considered by the Rehabilitation Board. It was a project which he. thought could'Nonsupported by the’ sociation.
The president (Mr C. M. Rout) was asked to discuss the proposal with the District Engineer of the Public Works Department. Interviewed to-day Mr Harley said he intended to ask the City Council to submit the proposal to the Nelson Harbour Board for its consideration and approval. He said the road was too narrow for the amount of traffic it carried. Its widening and straightening would make it safer and more convenient.
