NEW SCHEME FOR SOLDIERS REVOLUTIONARY CHANGE FROM PRESENT METHODS ZWellington, This DjQC A new scheme of physical training, involving many revolutionary changes from the present methods, is about to be applied throughout the army in New Zealand, said the Minister of Mr Jones, to-day. This scheme, which • came into operation in United Kingdom * training camps a few months ago will, * subject to minor modifications, be in- ? troduced here as soon as sufficient J commissioned and non-commissioned - officer instructors are trained. * J The first class of trainees as instruc- • | tors will assemble at the army school Z \on Monday. The new scheme aims at * toughening soldiers to a considerably * greater extent than previously attempt- * ed. It is divided into two main sec- - lions: (1) Basic physical training for » use during recruit training and for • troops working under static conditions Z or who require reconditioning. (2) * “Purposeful” physical training which, * as the name indicates, is intended to prepare a soldier in every possible way •* to meet the great physical stress of Z battle under all conditions. Training will entail marching, run- - ning on and cross-country in bat- Z tledress and boots, scaling ropes, logs, «• trees, cliffs and walls, etc., tugs-of-war, Z exercises with heavy logs, jumping. *■ obstacle courses, unarmed combat, m parachute landing exercises and tabloid J sports and parachute landing. The • exercises comprise relaxed fallings and J rolls downward, jumping from heights • of up to ten feet .and instruction in 2 boxing and swimming also have important places in the scheme. —P. A.
