DESTRUCTIVE FIRE
UPPER FLOOR OF DEPARTMENT STORE THOUSANDS OF POUNDS DAMAGE Dunedin, This Day. A destructive fire swept the upper floor of McDuff's Ltd. department store, George street, early this morning, damage to stocks and the building running into many thousands. The exact amount has not been assessed. A calm night facilitated a speedy save, the outbreak being extinguished in twenty minutes. The brigade’s new extension turnable ladder proved its value, enabling a lead to be established at once from the roof of the adjoining State Theatre. Although the fire was confined to the second floor, torrents of water poured through the ceiling on to the shop counters and floors. The stock is covered by Lloyds in Wellington for £15.000. with fittings £4OO.—P.A.
