APPEALS FOR EXEMPTION DECISIONS GIVEN BY BOARD The Armed Forces Appeal Board, sitting in the Supreme Courtroom, Nelson, to-day heard the following appeals for exemption from military service. The Board comprised Messrs G. L. Page (chairman), G. Manson and S. Kenning. W. S. Booth appealed in respect of an employee, J. W. Rennell, a farm hand, aged 39, a married man with four children. Appellant stated that he had formerly employed five men on his properties and reservist was now the only one left .le had had many years’ experience with stud stock which was specialised work. The appeal was adjourned sine die. J. G. Marshall Ltd. appealed in respect of an employee, E. Potts, foremancabinetmaker, a married man with two children. Appellants stated that cabinetmaking had been declared an essential industry and the firm was engaged on defence contracts. Reservist was the only cabinetmaker employed by the firm and it had been necessary to work an average of 10 hours overtime a week to get the work through. The appeal was adjourned sine die. The Board heard an appeal in respect of A. M. Suddaby, sawmill-manager and sawyer, employed by H. Robertson and Co. Reservist was a Grade I, single man, employed at a sawmill which had at present a shortage of seven men on its staff.

The appeal was adjourned for four months.

The Board heard an appeal, lodged at the request of the District Manpower Officer, in respect of R. H. Burdon, a clerk employed as chief ledgerkeeper by the Nelson City Council. Reservist, a Grade 111 man, had been called up for service in the local Army office.

The appeal was adjourned sine die. A. G. Rutland, motor engineer, a Grade I. married man, aged 39 years, appealed on the grounds of public interest. Reservist stated that two of his mechanics were in the Services and he was carrying on the business with one apprentice. He was engaged on work for essential transport services. The appeal was supported by the Manpower Utilisation Committee of the Nelson Motor Trade.

The appeal was adjourned sine die. Keith Walker Ltd. appealed in respect of an employee, C. P. J. Pike, r. dio mechanic, employed 0 n radio service work which had been declared an essential industry. The appeal was supported by the Radio Industrial Plan Committee, Wellington, which pointed out the serious shortage of radiotricians in New Zealand and the impossibility of replacing qualified radio mechanics who were called up. Reservist was a married man with two children, and Grade 11.

The appeal was adjourned sine die. The Board heard an appeal on the grounds of public interest by A. Russo, a naturalised British subject, a Grade I man. aged 39. a married man with two children. Reservist slated that he was engaged in tomato growing and each year grew 6500 tomatoes under glass and 11,000 plants outside. He did all the work himself with part-time assistance from another man who had a property of his own.
