PATRIOTIC EFFORTS

Sir, —An appeal has been made to the patriotism of the people of Nelson to accept employment (temporarily I take it) on the provision of foodstuffs for the men of the armed forces. By way of “clearing the air” for many people who are willing to help, could you tell why they should have trade union fees deducted from their wages, and whether they will be compelled, once they accept employment, to apDly to the Manpower Officers of the Government to obtain release from their duties? Surely if patriotic people try to help along the war effort, they should not have to contribute to the funds of wealthy trade unions nor be caught in the fold of the Placement Department.— I am, etc., “ANXIOUS.” Nelson, 4th February. The Manpower Regulations provide that if a worker is employed continuously for a period of at least seven working days it is necessary to apply to the Manpower Officer for permission to leave that employment. The regulations also require the payment of union fees and if any worker fails or refuses to pay them provision is made for their deduction from wages. These provisions do not apply to part-time workers.
