TASMAN TERCENTENARY
CELEBRATION IN HOKITIKA VISIT OF NETHERLANDS DELEGATION Hokitika, This Day. The Netherlands Delegation to the Tasman tercentenary celebrations, headed by Dr. van der Plas, arrived in Hokitika last evening, accompanied by Mr Parry, Minister in Charge of Internal Affairs. A civic welcome was extended by the borough and county councils in the Soldiers’ Hall. There was a large gathering of townspeople, and Mr Semple. Mr Webb and Mr O’Brien were also present. Proceedings proved very happy. The Mayor, Mr Elcock, presided, and addresses were given by Mr O’Neil, the county chairman. Mr Parry and Mr O’Brien. Dr. van der Plas replied, expressing appreciation of the warm welcome extended and pleasure at being in the district to assist in celebrating the notable anniversary.
This afternoon a formal celebration of the Tasman tercentenary is taking place at Hokitika, when a large gathering of town and country people is assured. To-morrow the delegation will travel by plane to Okarito and Waiho. This morning Dr. van der Plas placed a wreath on the South African Memorial.—P.A.
