SINKING OF RANGITANE

The second anniversary 0 f the sinking of the motor-vessel Rangitane by enemy raiders in the south Pacific falls to-day. The raiders were sighted from the liner shortly after dawn, and with over 100 passengers and a crew of 201 on board, the Rangitane was subjected to a severe shelling. Six people were killed in the attack and one woman later died from wounds received during the action. After abandoning the ship time bombs were placed on board and the vessel was finally sunk by torpedoes The survivors were taken op the raid ers and some were landed on the island of Emirau, in the B imarck group, north-west of the Solomon Islands, on 21st December. They were later res cued by an Australian ship.
