ORIGINATOR OF CONFERENCE

MR NEWMAN A PROUD MAN Mr Newman thanked the Nelson City Council for the use of the building and Mr Neale for acting as chairman. He thanked the local bodies for their response to the invitation to be present. He was a proud man to-day to see the attendance and his council shared that feeling. The reason for calling the conference was because he thought that none of the districts was satisfied with the progress which had been made in the past and he felt sure that the strength of unity in the three provinces would result in a new progressive era in the northern end of the He had at first thought of tion at the meeting of a local bodies’ association or organisation, and that this conference should elect a deputation to go to Wellington to interview the Rehabilitation Board on a number of subjects. He was pleased to see Mr H. Atmore, member for Nelson, and Messrs W. Black and W. H. Mclntyre, M.L.C.’s, present. He could see the time when other districts in New Zealand would adopt a similar organisation. The local bodies deserved to be listened to and he felt sure that any representations made by such a conference would be taken notice of. He hoped that the conference would prove the success he had hoped it would be. He paid a tribute to the work done by Mr Fennell, the Murchison County Clerk, and to the newspapers in Marlborough, Nelson and Buller for their support of his proposal. The Murchison County Council now handed the whole proposal over to the conference and he knew it would be successful. Mr M. Brown, chairman of the Murchison County Council, said that the council took little credit for the conference. The proposal came from Mr

Newman and the council had only c.one what it could in giving its support. VOTING AT CONFERENCE It was decided that the voting power at the conference be on the basis of a vote for each representative present. QUESTION OFCONSTITUTION COUNCIL OF TWELVE FAVOURED The conference order paper provided for the appointment of some kind of association or organisation to further the interests of the areas represented. An hour’s discussion took place on the subject before it. was decided on the motion of Mr L. A Higgins (Waimea County) and Mr Price (Havelock) that a council of twelve be set up, the Nelson, Marlborough and Buller-Inangahua districts each to elect four representatives on the council and that its name be the Nelson, Marlborough. BullerInangahua Local Bodies’ Executive Council.
