CHASING ENEMY SHIPS
SUCCESS OF SUBMARINE
PROTEUS PATROLS IN MEDITERRANEAN (Rec. 10.40 a.m.) Rugby, Nov. 10. The Admiralty states that the submarine Proteus recently returned to Britain after many successful patrols in the Mediterranean. Under LieutenantCommander P. S. Francis, the Proteus sank five enemy supply ships and a troopship of 8000 tons. She also torpedoed a second troopship, a tanker, an escort vessel and another mediumsized supply ship and. although the final results were not observed, all probably sank.
Later, under Lieutenant Alexander, the Proteus sank a large enemy supply ship and seriously damaged another which was probably sunk. Thus the Proteus has added approximately 16.000 tons of enemy shipping to the total destroyed by British submarines. Two cases were ships which carried troops for Field Marshal Rommel to Libya and other cases had valuable cargoes.— 8.0. W.
