ARMISTICE DAY
CEREMONY AT CHURCH STEFS THIS MORNING A ceremony to mark the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice which ended the Great War of 1914-18 was held at the Church Steps this morning. The majority of those present were returned soldiers with representatives of the various sections of the community, including the City Council and other local bodies, the Church and the Army.
Although it was not possible to give the usual warning to the public by means of factory whistles, most traffic in the streets came to a standstill at 11 o’clock. As the Last Post was sounded by Trumpeter E. C. Robinson, StaffSergeant F. B. Pilcher, N.Z.T.S., lowered the Union Jack on the Church Hill flagstaff and after two minutes’ silence the flag was raised to the masthead and The Rouse was sounded by the trumpet-
Mr U. R. L. West, president of the Nelson Returned Services’ Association and Mr A. C. Wastney, a member of the association after service with the 2nd N.Z.E.F. placed a beautiful wreath on the War Memorial.
