SOLDIERS’ PARCELS
“NELSON CARRIES THE HONOURS” APPRECIATIVE LETTERS Keen appreciation and praise for the quality of the goods in the Nelson parcels sent to the troops overseas was expressed in two letters received recently by a Riwaka resident. One soldier wrote: “I have to thank you for your splendid parcel of comforts that I received just recently, thanks to your generosity, from the Nelson Patriotic Council. We have received several of these welcome parcels during the time that we have been over here, but I can assure you that, while each one has been excellent, this latest gift is the best we have received. While I am a Wellingtonian, I have to admit that the Nelson Provincial Patriotic district carries the honours so far as the quality of the parcels is concerned. The fruit cake was most enjoyable as was the tinned fruit and the other articles will come in very handy.” The second soldier wrote: “Just a short note in answer to your letter, and to convey my sincere thanks and appreciation for the wonderful parcel I received yesterday. You could hardly realise what it means to everyone concerned to get these parcels from you good people at home. I must say it certainly does bring one’s mind back to home and more so still to know we are always in the thoughts of our people back in good old New Zealand. All the boys are looking forward to the day when everyone is
sitting down to their turkey dinner for Christmas. The contents of your parcel were in excellent condition, and everyone’s eyes lit up when a paraded the two cakes for morning tea.”
