FRENCH NAVAL UNITS WIPED OUT
FIGHTING AT CASABLANCA JEAN BART A BURNING HULK (Rec. 1.25 p.m.) Rugby, Nov. 10. The entire force of French destroyers and other fighter craft at Casablanca has been wiped out, according to a war correspondent at Allied Force headquarters, who adds that the Jean Bart was left a burning hulk and a cruiser was badly damaged. The French destroyers put up the stiffest resistance and Admiral Hewitt threw in the entire weight of his battle fleet, including dive-bombers. Naval forces are now bombarding the Moroccan coast, and heavy naval action is imminent.
The capture of Oran in the opinion of another correspondent means to all practical purposes the end of the western Mediterranean campaign and permits the United Nations to consolidate in preparation for operations eastward against the Axis. —8.0. W.
