TRANSPORT PROBLEMS
TRIBUTE TO COASTWISE SHIPPING
(Rec. 11.45 a.m.) Rugby, Nov. 3. Discussing transport problems, Britain’s Minister of War Transport, Lord Leathers, paid a tribute to coastwise shipping, perhaps the most outstanding fact about which was that after three years of war despite attacks from the air, by surface craft, submarines and mines we had a greater volumne 0 f such shipping than in peacetime. The coaster helped to relieve the strain on the inland transport system. They moved cargo, and particularly bulk cargoes, round Britain’s shores. British coasters made some 25,000 voyages around the coasts and this had involved already more than 100 coastal convoys and practically continuous work by all concerned. —8.0. W.
