The word “fuchsia” used to be a favourite “crux” at the old-fashioned spelling-bees. The plant is so called from the German botanist Leonard Fuchs, iust as the dahlia was named from Dahl, the Swedish botanist. The popular pronunciation is. in both cases, purely conventional. ,
