TOWN BOARD MEETING EIRE DANGER ON HILL AREA The monthly meeting of the Tahunanui Town Board held last evening was i attended by Messrs C. H. Chamberlain (chairman), C. P. Palmer, T. H. Roberts. L. Hayward. A. B. Ingram, and T. Hudson. Accounts amounting to £97 2s lOd were passed for payment. ; The Nelson Education Board asked if the Board would assist in meeting | the cost of making drainage from the j sehoblground to Muritai street perman- | The Board decided to contribute £25, j without prejudice, towards the cost of [piping the drain in Muritai street and Centennial road. I The Board’s foreman. Mr E. K. Win, ; reported that the Green street ditch 1 had been cleaned out and some patching ! done. Cleaning up was being carried I out round the young trees planted last i year on the reserve between Moana avenue and Victoria load where the I grass required burning off as it would ! be a fire danger. Further ditch cleaning ! work was intended. ! C. C. Oaten told wrote drawing the Board's attention tu the state of the [section adjoining his property at the | corner of Moana avenue and Edward street. The section was overgrown with j gorse and caused a tire danger. Mrs E. J. Adams also wrote complaining about the lack of fire breaks [on properties on the hill where the growth of gorse created a lire danger. ■ Mr Hayward said that a number of notices had been sent out to have that fire menace removed and it was time the Board took action. The chairman said that under the E.P.S. rc ulations the tire organiser was vested with power to instruct people to clean their sections and notices to that effect had been sent out. If the owners did not do it the work could be done under instruction by the E.P.S. organiser. It was decided to send out notices to property owners to clear their sections. It was decided that in future the Board's office would be open from 4 to 6 o’clock on Wednesday afternoons.

EIRE BRIGADE MATTERS

j A deputation from the Tuhunanui ! Volunteer Fire Brigade, consisting ot | Messrs E. E. Win, R. M. Win, C. GoodI man, R. Wanstall, W. Goodwin, B. W, j Wanstall and Douglas, waited on the i Board to make a number of requests. ;The brigade asked for permission ic j widen the bridge in front of the fire- | bell. It. was pointed out that recently j the brigade had received a call to Stoke (and the opinion of the Board on the brigade’s answering calls outside the I Board’s area was requested. It was [ thought that in any case payment for j the brigade’s services should be made for outside calls to reimburse the board for the replacement of materials used. jThe brigade also wished to have the ‘ firebel 1 raised. Difficulty was at present j experienced in firemen hearing alarms and the brigade wished to have a buzzer system installed in a number of firemen’s houses. The bridge request was granted. As the brigade was willing to undertake calls outside the district the Board gave its approval of such action the limit on the distance being Ngawhatu road, Stoke. It was decided to approach the Waimea County Council with a request that it make a contribution to the Board for such services. The matter of the buzzer system would be referred to the E.P.S. committee. In the meantime the raising of the be-11 was deferred.
