PATRIOTIC WORK

NELSON CITY ACTIVITIES The weekly meeting of the Nelson City Patriotic Committee was held last evening and the following were present: Mr A. H. Crawlsv (chairman). Miss Hunter Brown. Mrs V. B. Treacher. Miss J. Tomlinson. Messrs A. B. Kidson, E. N. Ford. J. A. Harley, J. G. Ingram, C. C. Challies and F. V. Powell ‘secretary). An apology was received from Mr C. A. Hamilton.

PATRIOTIC SHOP

Last week the Nelson Golf Club had j a successful day at the Patriotic Shop when just over £52 was raised. It was decided to send the club a letter of thanks. Some time ago Mrs Pitt’s working party had a day at the shop and collected £B7 for their effort which was the second best collection this year. On Thursday next the :ame organisati on will take charge and from reports to hand it is expected that all records, not only for this year, out since the inception of the shop. v/Jl be broken. A feature of the day will be a splendid collection of home-made cakes and marmalade which will find a ready sale. A number of children’s new clothes have been donated while a large array of 6d articles will be available. During the morning cups of coffee will be available between 10 and 11 and in the afternoon cups of tea will be sold. Large quantities of flowers will also on sale

APPLICATIONS

i The Combined Nelson Swimminj Clubs applied for permission to hold i sale of Allied Nations badges in tin city streets on Saturday. 26th Septem ber. and also t<4 have several stalls ir Trafalgar street for the sale of pro duce. The clubs also asked for au thority to hold an Allied Nations bail or 30 Lh September. The necessary per mission was granted subject to the con sent of th j City Council. The application of Mrs R. T. Carlyor and Mrs Goldfinch to hold a Paddy’s Market in November was deferred fot further discussion with the ladies con eerned as the committee did not wish to hold any functions after 30th Sep jtember, provided the £15,000 Appea I was fully subscribed. It was hoped thai arrangements could be made to hole the function at an earlier date. NATIONAL COUPON CAMPAIGN Mr Ingram reported that the neces sary arrangements had been completed for a military parade at 2.30 p.m, on Friday next when it was expected that a large number of men would be on parade. It was decided that no coupons be sold for less than 2s 6d which was the smallest amount shown on the list of channels through which donations may be sent. The matter of displaying the contents of a prisoners of war parcel was left to Messrs A. B. Kidson and C. Milner. The Pipe Band very kindly offered their services for Friday evening and the offer was accepted with thanks. Mr C. C. Challies reported that the amount now’ in hand for the £15.000 Appeal was £11,990.
