HAIPHONG BOMBED
U.S. AIRMEN SURPRISE JAPANESE EXTENSIVE DAMAGE CAUSED FIERCE FIGHTING IN CHINA (Rec. 12.15 p.m.) Chungking, Aug. 10. United States planes bombed the waterfront at Haiphong, in IndoChina, causing extensive damage. They scored hits on steamers in port. General Stilwell’s headquarters communique revealed that a direct hit was scored on a 4000-ton steamer, and a large oil fire was started in the docks. All the bombs landed in the target area. After the bombers released their loads escorting planes machine-gun-ned docks. The complete lack of opposition indicates that the enemy was taken by surprise. Fierce fighting is unabated on the outskirts of Linchwan, which is completely surrounded says a communique. Some points changed hands ten times. -P.A.
