JAPANESE DRIVE HALTED
CHINESE CONTINUE TO BESIEGE LINCHWAN U.S. BOMBERS RAID CANTON AREA Chungking - , Aug. 8. A communique issued by General Stillwell says American bombers with fighter escort again raided the Canton area, and shot down two Japanese fighters of a new type, damaged another, destroyed several on the ground and caused severe damage to an aerodrome, also to docks, hangars and harbour buildings. The Chinese everywhere have halted the three-pronged Japanese drive from Kwangfeng and have thwarted Japanese attacks in central Kiangsi province while the Chinese continue to besiege Linchwan. —P.A.
