LIFE OF NELSON GIRLS’ COLLEGE

A TREE FOR EACH DECADE COMPANIONS FOR MAJESTIC BLUE GUM Tomorrow at the Nelson Girls’ College six trees will be planted in observance of Arbor Day These trees will have another significance: they will each represent one decade in the life of the school and pupils of each decade will plant a tree to commemorate the sixtietli year of the historv of Nelson College for girls. The veteran gum tree, standing, a silent sentinel, at the College gates, makes it seem appropriate that trees should be planted to mark the sixtieth year of the College. For it alone, of all living things, lias been present through all the changes and developments in the life of the school and. growing with the school, has come to be revered and accepted as part of the College tradition Under its branches played the first pupils of the school. What a contrast the tree must see between the neatlyuniformed chattering groups who pass by to-day and the decorous maidens who doubtless chattering, too. passed by on that first day, 2nd February, 1882. arrayed in a diversity of garments of all colours and shapes.
