THE SOLOMONS BATTLE

CAREFULLY’ PREPARED PLAN’S MR CURTIN'S COMMENT Sydney, Aug. 9. Referring to the Solomon.*; battle Mr Curtin Prime Minister, said the Washington communique was the consummation of a series of preparations by the United Nations, including Australia. which had been proceeding for some weeks. The state of the war was such that it was impossible to surprise the enemy and simultaneously in. dicate to the people at large the steps which were proceeding. In short, we cannot surprise the enemy unless we subject ourselves to surprise. The War Council knew of this impending operation. which was definitely offensive in conception and revealed the determination of the commands in this theatre to wage a fighting war at its maximum at such times and places as sound gen eralship would dictate. I can only express the hope that the plans so carefully prepared, and I have no doubt

re being so gallantly executed, will be uccessful.”—P.A.
