"THE THIRTEENTH CHAIR" The play chosen by the Nelson Repertory Club for the first July reading was a mystery drama entitled "The Thirteenth Chair.” Owing to the large cast, some of the men taking part read two or more roles. The action centred round a spiritualist seance conducted by Madame La Grange (Mrs A. S G. Adam) at the New York homo of Mr Crosbv (Mr 11. Leggatt) and his wife Mrs Crosby (Mrs E. R. NealeL In on endeavour to discover the murderer of n close friend and guest named Wales 'Mr C G. Kirk) suggests a seance in which thirteen people take part. When (he lights are lowered Wales himself is stabbed, but no weapon is found until some time later. The medium, in an endeavour to save her daughter Helen (Mrs D. Everett) who is strongly suspected of both crimes, prevails upon the Inspector (Mr Kirk) to use her powers once again, with everyone present. The tense atmosphere so created lias the desired psychological effect on Mason 'Mr W. H. Allen) who imagines he again sees his victim, whom he hud stabbed. The knife falls from the ceiling where it had been embedded by the point, and he confesses his guilt.
