WOMEN TRAM CONDUCTORS
TO BE SEEN IN AUC KLAND SOON Auckland, April 29. Il is expected that in four or five weeks' time women will be employed n the Auckland trams. The chairman of the transport board, Mr J. Sayegh, said to-day* that women would not have to be employed till the additional JOB men were called up /or service. About 200 applications had been received from women to act as conductresses. The training of women would commence in about a fortnight's time. Preference would be given to wives of tramwaymen serving overseas or in the forces. The ages would be between 2J and 35. and the women would receive the same pay as the men. There are seven women members of the Auckland Drivers’ Union engaged in light delivery work and giving efficient service, stated the secretary, Mr L. G. Matthews, to-day. They are teiceiving the same pay as men. That was a principle organised labour insisted upon, lie said.—P.A.
