MISTAKE ON MANOEUVRES
FIGHTER PILOT MACIIINE-GLNS TROOPS EXPLANATION BY AIR MINISTER ' Rec. 1.30 p.m A Rug by, April 29. Sir Archibald Sinclair. Air Minister, in the House of Commons, replying to question by Dr. Russell Thomas about the accident during Army manoeuvres on the Salisbury Plain said it occurred during an exercise by the Fighter Conimand arranged for officers and other ranks of the home forces to demonstrate the effects of fighter planes firing at ground targets. Attacks were made against dummy troops, a lorry convoy and tanks disposed as the targets. After five Hurricanes in turn had successfully attacked, the sixth fired at the spectators in the enclosure in mistake for the allotted target with the deplorable result that 29 Army officers and other ranks were killed and 68 Army officers, other ranks, and three R.A.F. officers and airmen were injured. The Air Council, in consultation with the Army Council, is now considering the findings of the Court of Inquiry —P.A.
