CORRESPONDENCE The Minister of Public Works advised that it would be necessary to .submit a report to the District Engineer concerning the damage done by the | Hood. I It was reported that this report had already been submitted. | The Minister of Transport advised j that he had instructed the No. 3 TransI port Licensing Authority to view the j licenses of all goods transport operators l concerned in the transport from Nelson I vo Glenhope, and that the council v. ould be notified when the sitting was t.i be held so that it could support its objection to the vehicles running between the above places. It was decided that tlie chairman and Councillor Spiers should represent the council at the silting. The Murchison Library Committee wrote asking for a grant towards their funds. It was decided that the sum of £2 2s be donated. Messrs B. K. Morton advised that they now have on the market a weed i killer which was recommended as a ! substitute for one which is off the mar- | ket. t It was resol'ed that one gallon of the i mixture be obtained for trial by the County Engineer. The Nelson Hospital Board advised that the cottage ho.'/ital in Murchison v.ould continue to function under proper control until a permanent appointment could be made. COUNCILLORS’ REQUESTS Councillor Milligan asked that War--I,es Bluff be put in order, and was assured that arrangements were being made to have the work done. He also asked that maintenance work De carried cut on the road to A. O'Rourke’s property. and the matter was referred to the Engineer. Councillor Milligan referred to the state of the seats in the Memorial Ground, and it was resolved that the seats be painted. Councillor Morel asked that the slip in the Blackwater Creek be cleared, and the matter was left in his hands to arrange. The matter of the river erosion on the Blackwater road, mentioned by Councillor Morel, was referred to the Engineer. Councillor Spiers asked that Ragg’s roacl be attended to , and the matter was referred to the foreman. On the motion of Councillor Spiers it v as resolved that Mr Downie be asked to bear half the cost of the boundary fence between his property and the council section. It was also decided on the motion of Councillor Spiers that Mr W. G. ! O'Rourke be granted a year to year [ lease for five years of the beach property. at a rental of £3 per annum. It was decided that the District Engineer be advised that a supplementary report on the flood damage will be submitted to him. PRESENTATION TO RETIRING j CLERK t At the conclusion of the meeting a presentation was made from the councillors and the electrical engineer to the county clerk, Mr J. H. McAuliffe, who i, leaving at the end of the month to take an appointment at New Plymouth. In making the presentation the county chairman referred to the very efficient! and capable manner in which Mr Me- j Auliffe had carried out his duties, with the result that the affairs of the county were now in a very satisfactory state. Ik expressed the regret of the council at his departure, and wished him every success in his future position. Mr McAuliffe suitably replied. FURTHER RECOGNITION OF SERVICES During the past week several functions have been held to bicl farewell to Mr and Mrs J. H. McAuliffe, who are leaving Murchison to make their home in New Plymouth. During the past five years Mr McAuliffe has been; county county clerk to the Murchison j County Council, also practising his profession as a public accountant. Mrs McAuliffe has been a member of the Lady Galway Committee since its formation and secretary during the past: This committee met at the residence) of Mrs L. W. Hodgson to bid farewell! to Mrs McAuliffe and a very sociable evening was spent in games musical! items, etc. The Emergency Precautions Scheme, for which Mr McAuliffe has been secretary. also held a social evening and presented Mr McAuliffe with a gift in recognition of his services in organising the scheme for the district.
