MINIMUM OF APPEALS

REQUEST BY MR SEMPLE Wellington, This Day. “The tendency to appeal should be avoided as much as is humanly possible so that our fighting services can be be built up rapidly.” said the Minister < ; National Service, Mr Semple, when referring last evening to the "Gazette’’ issued yesterday calling up 17.955 men for military service. The Minister added that if, however, it was necessary tor appeals to be lodged- -and he quiterealised that this course was necessary *n a number of cases—all must be post'd or delivered to manpower committees on or before Bth May. “Manpower committees are working : top pressui'e in order to dispose of appeals in respect of the last ballot as c.uickly as possible,” said Mr Sempie “and if any appeals are late it is extremely unlikely that they will be heard.” Mr Semple said there had been many , inquiries regarding the date of the next ballot and the classes of men to be called up. While he appreciated the e’esire of people to have this information. he regretted that at this stage it as not possible to give any indication. Trere were many factors to be considered, and as soon as War Cabinet vas in a position to make an announcen ent the public would be advised.— P.A.
