LUFTWAFFE’S SPITEFUL REPRISAL
OUT FOR RESIDENTIAL AREAS NORWICH UNDAUNTED AFTER ORDEAL (Rec. 1.20 p.m.) Rugby, April 28. Norwich, which for the last 1,300 years survived many ordeals is undaunted by the latest German “spite” raid, which caused heavy casualties and widespread damage. Most of Norwich’s historic building! are unscathed, the majority of bombs falling in residential districts. The dead included firewatchers and ambulance personnel. One of the earliest raiders caused a i large fire which guided other raiders, which dropped many chandelier flares. Buildings damaged included churches and hospitals. Streets were covered with rubble and broken glass. The raiders were engaged by night fighters. Correspondents to Swiss newspapers in Berlin quote a statement by German officials that in reprisal for British raids, the Luftwaffe will now go out for every building in-Britain which is marked with three stars in Baedeker’s Tourist Guide. One correspondent says all pretence of German reprisal raids directed against military objectives has now been dropped and the German Press openly admits they are directed against residential di.-irict.s- wtnks of I art and historical monuments —8.0.
