THE GERMAN ARMY
BELF-CON FIDENC E NOT regained FIGHTING ON LENINGRAD FRONT (Rec. 1.45 p.m.) London, April 28. Trustworthy information endorses the view that the German Army has not yet regained self-confidence, says the Stockholm correspondent of "The Times.” Crack troops, including S.S. formations, delivered blows not wholly defensive around Leningrad, also at Rjev, Gjatsk and in the Viazma sector but it is doubtful whether that will be able to inspire the troops along the whole 1000mile front with the spirit in which the German Army swept over the vast Russian plain from June until November. Men have already been larged changed, but the mud is not in favour of high spirits. It is reported that a German division defeated in the Leningrad area is retreating southwards, but the movement may possibly mean the rearrangement of forces on firmer ground. The Soviet Army continues reconnaissances on harder ground in the north against German and Finnish troops. These attacks have severely tested the Germans in the direction of Sawia also near Povy r enets. German bombers are active lately in the Leningrad, Smolensk and Black Sea areas.—P.A.
