BASES IN INDIAN OCEAN
JAPAN NEGOTIATING WITH VICHY New York, Feb.. 11. Japan is reported to be seeking naval bases in Madagascar from Vichy, says the "New York Posts” London correspondent. who quotes Allied diplomatic quarters as the source of his information. Tliis is Japan’s first step, he says, in the effort to establish naval supremacy in the Indian Ocean, and to cut the supply lines from Britain and America, via the Cape of Good Hope, to Australia and the Middle East.
