BENEDICTS’ PATRIOTIC BALL
SUCCESSFUL RHYAKA FUNCTION Outstanding among the many patriotic efforts made bv the Riwaka district was the Benedicts’ ball held on I Friday evening in aid of Patriotic Funds, and those responsible for the function have good reason to feel gratified at the splendid support given by the public The hall was tastefully decorated for the occasion with fed. white and blue streamers radiating from the centre and sprays of greenery on the walls and stage. Excellent music was supplied bv Harold Williams's orchestra and Mr J. W Duncan and Mr I). Mickell of- . ficiated as Masters of Ceremonies. Ex- ! tras were played by Mr A. Stuart. The j programme included many old time j dances, which proved immensely popular. j During the evening Mr J. Goodyer, ! chairman of the Soldiers' Farewell i Committee made a presentation on be- ! half of the district to Leading Air- ' craftman Ken Leigh, who is home on i leave. This young man. he said, was i deservedly popular in the district and ! had proved himself an outstanding success in his scholastic activities Ho was j leaving with the very best wishes from i all his friends, who were very proud 1 of him. i The waltzing competition was won ;by Mr Leonard Woolf and his sister. ; Miss Florrie Woolf, with Mr and Mrs ,H. L. Goodall runners-up. The winners ,of the Lucky Spot were Mr A Stuart j and Miss Elaine Holyoake. The prizes for these competitions were donated Iby Messrs Roy Fry and B. W. Hick- ! mott. ! Competitions were won as follows: I Christmas cake (Mrs Geo. Fry), Mrs I Shepherd; Christmas cake (Mrs Wal- ; ter Thomas). Phyllis McNnbb; sucking 'pig (Messrs W. and R. Goodall). Mr j Coley Drummond; mystery parcel (Mr jF. Painter). Mr Geo. Fry. One pint of j whitebait, donated by Mr Harry Dal- | ley-Smith and auctioned by Mr Gor- ! don Burk, realised 15s. i The ladies’ committee in charge of i supper arrangements was as follows: j Mesdames B. W. Hickmott, E. Askew, iE. Sparks, Reg Hickmott. W. H. i Goodall, R. Y, Drummond, C. Barnett | and Miss K. Reed. J The net proceeds amounted to £37 I 5s 9d.
