53,000 CALLED OUT INTERFERENCE WITH WAR j PROGRAMME (Rec 12.30 p.m.) Washington, Oct. 26. j Rejecting the request by President ; Roosevelt that work must not cease in ! the steel industry’s vital coal mines in the Southern Appalachian area. Mr I John Lewis ordered 53.000 united mine j workers out on strike. The mines are owned by steel companies and supply the coal needed urgently for the war programme. The dispute is chiefly over the claim for compulsory unionism in the mines.—U.P.A.
