DIET TO MEET
SURPRISE AND SPECULATION 1 RETURN TO CONSTITUTIONALISM Tokio, Oct. 25. The Tokio correspondent of the "New York Times,” Mr Tohschus, says that a - decision by Cabinet to petition the - i Emperor for the convocation of an exi | traordinary session of the Diet for live , days from 15th November has taken - i the nation completely by surprise and - j caused much speculation. Japanese 1 newspapers declare that the Prime -, Minister. General Tojo, will seek na- _ 1 tional support for the Governments _ i policy, thus eliminating the fear that s | he might follow the example of other c ; military statesmen. r ' The "Nichi Nichi Shimbun” says the - session w ill reveal the new Governf : rtent's attitude to the United States e in order to obtain the nation’s solid rnd resolute support. Mr Tolischus agrees that the calling - of the session marks a return to r , Japanese constitutionalism. It sided tracks the totalitarian ideas that Axis o enthusiasts have propounded. The Information Board said that the h purpose was “to obtain the approval - of additional Budget plans and legis- - lutive Bills to meet the present situar tion, and also to express the firm determination of the present Cabinet regarding the prosecution of the national i policies.” ~ Observers are of the opinion that the _ ; primary purpose is to approve large p | military appropriations. THE FOOD PROBLEM e Because the food problem is becum- - ir.g increasingly difficult. Japan is - turning a large part of her silk- _ producing orchards into grain fields s end is drastically cutting the produc- _ tion of rice, wine, tobacco and tea. To conserve fuel, fishing-boats must red place power with sails. —U.P.A.
