MORE PLAYERS THIS YEAR NORTH ISLAND TOUR PROPOSED NEW GREEN AT TA HUNAN I I The Tahunanui Bowling Club's green is making a good recovery after being covered to a height of several feet with cflirth from the slips caused by the recent heavy rain. Several of the Nelson district clubs have made many additions to their membership since last year, the total increase being 79. In 1940 total membership of the clubs in the centre was 358; it is now 437. The Takaka Bowling Club has applied to hold a tournament at New Year, commencing on Ist January. It is proposed to extend the tournament for three days. Mr W. A. Dee has been m communication with the Wellington, Palmerston North. Wanganui and New Plymouth Bowling Centres with a view to arranging a comprehensive tour of these parts. It is proposed to leave Nelson on 12th January and return home on 22nd January. Mr Dee is receiving a large measure of support from the members of various Nelson clubs and the total number to make the trip may reach 40 players. RICHMOND CLUB OPENS GREEN Probably owing to the uncertainty of the weather very few local and visiting bowlers attended the opening of the 1941-42 season of the Richmond Bowling Club on Saturday afternoon. The club was fortunate in having present a good number of ladies, who are ali ways welcome on the green. The president of the club (Mr J. G. Cressey) extended a hearty welcome to visiting bowlers and ladies and statjed that owing to the extremely wet j spring so far experienced the opening jof the green had been postponed for ; two weeks. Mr Cressey read messages ; of goodwill and for a prosperous season from Wellington on behalf of Messrs I A. Hodgson, James Haigh. Jack Ilaigh. 1 Cecil Haigh, Keith Martin and Alex, i Officer. An apology for absence was ! received from the Rev. J. D. and Mrs j Grocott. Mapua Club also sent an j apology for non-attendance. } Mr J. G. Wilkens. on behalf of the i Wakefield Bowling Club, thanked the Richmond Club for the invitation to be ! present. Mr Wilkens stated that the members of his club thoroughly enjoy- , ed the keenness in which the matches ' between the two clubs were played. He hoped this season would prove no exception. Mrs W E Poole trailed the first kitty and Mrs J. G Cressey, wife of the president. sent down the first bowl, which was the proverbial “toucher.” On declaring the green open for the season the president stated that owing to the heavy state of the green only a limited number of ends would be played. Mr Cressey then invited members and visitors to have a game. However, before trie game had finished a light shower of rain stopped play for the afternoon.
