BODIES ON BEACHES

TOLL OF ITALIAN CONVOY’S C airo, Oct. 21. Hundreds of Italian dead are being washed up on the white sand beaches i oi' Western Egypt. For more than 100 miles, between Mersa Matruh and Solium. Empire troops patrolling the coast see this grim evidence of the toll being taken of Italian convoys to Libya. Members have seen hundreds of bodies along the coast, floating in groups or singly, or washed up on the beaches. Steady and relentless efforts of British submarines, warships and aeroplanes to block reinforcement of Axis forces in Libya form one of the big battles of the war. Axis transports, nevertheless, are still trying to make the hazardous crossing from Sicily to Tripoli almost every night. The reinforcements that get through must see more of their dead comrades along the beaches in their own area than are being cast up in this area. This cannot be calculated to improve their morale, particularly if tile Axis commanders are about to throw them into an attack on our defences.
