CAN RESIST FOR YEARS
CLAIM BY RUSSIAN SPOKESMAN ENORMOUS GERMAN LOSSES (Rec. 1.30 p.m.) London. Oct. 24. The Russian spokesman. M. Lozovsky, announced at Kuibyshev that the German offensive at Mojaisk and MaloYaroslavetz is checked. Fighting continues in the Orel sector but the newmain German thrust seems to be developing at Kalinin, half of which is still in Russian hands. He added that the Germans had lost several hundred thousand men in the new battle for Moscow. Fighting was growing fiercer j every moment. “We can resist for several years. It ' remains to be seen how much longer ; the Germans can stand the losses,” he said. M. Lozovsky said that German propaganda alleged that the Soviet cannot organise new formations. The Soviet armies were not only being destroyed, but enormous forces wtr. being trained under Marshal Budenny and Marshal 1 Voroshilov. The Germans would soon have practical proof that the Soviet . forces were far from being used up and ! were increasing daily. i “Pravda” says: ‘The Germans have j launched a new offensive in a north- i western direction, particularly in the ( direction of Lake Ilmen. They are ] simultaneously forcing an entry into < Kalinin. Stubborn fighting hrs con- j tinued for several days and it is now ] possible to say that thp enemy's plans 1 are frustrated. Heavy k sses have been , inflicted.”—U.P.A. .
