BOXING IN EGYPT

BAUD AND FAST EXHIBITION ' (N.Z.EF. Official News Service). Cairo. Sept. 27. New Zealand soldiers were treated to 1 an exhibition of hard fast and clever 1 boxing when their base camp team met a team from an Imperial base depot. The British boxers, showing the results j of superior training, gave a fine display i of footwork and science to win by 22 t points to 17. taking nine of the 13 fights. ! Although their victory was clear-cut and well-deserved, every man had a hard fight against the New Zealanders who made up in grit and willingness | what they lacked in technique. Heavy i punishment was taken in some fights, i but all the bouts which covered every j weight division from bantam-weight to cruiser-weight were clean, fast and j good tempered. | The cup for the most scientific boxer |of the evening was awarded to T. Twigger. a British welter- weight, who (displayed skill and speed in beating ! R. K. Hurran in the last bout of the evening. Hurran was by no means , easy, but a fast three rounds saw- Twigi ger’s superior fitness telling in the third. I The winner did not waste a punch and j took verv little punishment. As with i all the British team, his footwork and | balance went a long way towards his j superiority. A New Zealand lightweight, J. Doyle, : won the cup for the best loser. The award was a popular one, Doyle having earned admiration by his splendid i display of gameness and willingness to i come back for more. He was beaten I by L/Cpl. Dale in the hardest bout of I the evening Doyle went to the canvas i several times in the second round, but ! in the third he was saved a good deal of punishment by the Britisher's overeagerness. The Now' Zealanders depended on > their in-fighting and gave mure than they took in close exchanges. Their main fault lay in the fact that too many | were throwing their punches and los- ' ing the sting which some of them obviously possessed. Results were:— Bantam weight: Spr.
