RESCUE AT SEA
VERY CARTRIDGE SAVES LIVES Rugby, Oct., 24. A Verey cartridge saved the lives of the crew of an R.A.F. aircraft, when [they were dri/ting in a rubber dinghy [at sea off the south-west coast of Britain. The crew were found by a [searching Hudson, lost and found .again. A few minutes later they were picked up by a Sunderland flyingboat of the Australian squadron of the ; R.A.F. Coastal Command, which 'alighted and taxied up to them. It i was in the nick of time, as the dinghy (was shipping water fast in the choppy | Within an hour of taking off the (leading Hudson of the search party [saw the smoke of a Verey pistol on the sea. The pilot dived very low, dropped food, brandy, chocolate and cigarjettes. But the glare of the sun on the j sea was so blinding that, when the [Hudson came in again, the pilot was i unable to see the dinghy. He began ' another systematic search. and 10 [minutes later saw the star of a second I Verey cartridge. He sent out a mess- ; ag; giving the position and, in a few ; minutes, two more Hudsons arrived, followed by a Sunderland flying-bout. I which alighted and took the men aboard. —8.0. W.
