FROM TORPEDOED LINER Rugby, Oct. 24. Two women passengers on the British lint r Avoceta, sunk by a U-boat in tin- Atlantic, owe their lives to an officer of the merchant navy and a j naval signal rating. The ship was tor- | pedoed in heavy weather and was sinking No boats could be launched lin time. As the Avoceta sank, the chief i officer and the yeoman of signals took j the two women and swam w ith them jto small rafts w hich floated clear of | the ship. The women were in a state ; of <•< 1 lapse, but for nearly three hours the two held them on the raft Time (after time the women nearly fell off the raft as the seas swept over them, j At ’ast they were sighted by an escort ! vessel and rescued By this time both j men were in a stale of exhaustion and Gufferine from void and exposure !
