HAPPINESS CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING VISIT OF DIRECTOR AND AUCKLAND MEMBERS The first, annual meeting of the Ncl- | son Happiness Club was held in the Masonic Hall, Collingwood street, accommodation being t; xcd to the ut- 1 most.. The room was gaily decorated | with flags an bowls of Iceland pop- [ pics and lilac, and on arrival each guest and member was presented with ! a dainty buttonhole by Ula Drummond and Patricia Froggatt. Mrs Anncar, president, welcomed the director (Miss Joan Sutherland) and Auckland visitors, friends and members. The Mayoress. Mrs E. R. Neale, welcomed the visiting members and spoke of the practical work done by the Happiness Club. Mrs Neale was presented with a dainty shoulder spray and the director received a posy. The reports of the secretary and treasurer were read, after which Miss Sutherland congratulated the president, executive and members on their successful year and the harmonious way in which the Nelson branch worked. Mrs Annear i presented the executive and committee I each with a shoulder spray. Miss Sutherland read birthday greetings from Auckland City, Mt. Eden and New Plymouth branches, and also presented Mrs Annear with a gift from the Ngaruawahia branch. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mrs Clements; vicepresident, Mrs Annear; treasurer, Mrs Benjamin; secretary, Mrs Froggatt; committee, Mesdames Coxhill, Cullen, Ecimondson. Henry, Livick, Powrie, Scott, Scully, Stafford and Walker. Miss Sutherland congratulated the new executive and committee and addon that with the continued support and loyalty of members, the club would continue to carry on the great work commenced by the founder, Miss Dorothy Wood. From the Nelson branch Joan was then presented with a supper cloth containing signatures of members worked in the two Nelson blues by Mrs Ricketts. A dainty afternoon tea was served, after which items were given by Mrs Woolf and Ula Drummond. Greetings were given by the following visiting "Gran” Martin (mother pres., New Plymouth), Mrs McClymont (Remuera), Mrs Hynes (Grey Lynn). Mrs Johnston (Avondale), Mrs Clow (North Shore). Mrs Ferry (New Plymonth). Mrs Pengelly (vice-pres.. Otah.uhu), Mrs Pearson (vice-pres., City), Mrs Scott (travelling sec., Mt. Albert), Mrs Jackson (pres.. Recreation Group). | Other visiting members were: Mes- ! dames Phillips. Bishop, Bint, McFar- ! lane. Godfrey, F. Bell, Thorp, E. G. : Bell. McGregor, Shaw. Perry. Gollan, | Pritchard. Shaw, Black, Vincent, Itidg- ' way, Holley, Morgan. Wilmott, Wind- ! sor, Dorsett, Burgess, Greever and Miss j Fr.ringden. The meeting concluded with the singing of "God Save the King.” SOCIAL AND DANCE At night the first birthday of the club was celebrated with a social and dance in the Masonic Hall. The hall was packed with members and friends, and amongst those present were: The Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs E. K. Neale), the Director (Miss Joan Sutherland) and 35 Auckland members, also representatives of the following women's organisations: Townswomen’s Guild (Mesdames Wilson and Morgan), Townswomen’s West (Mesdames Gustavcl and McLean), Catholic Old Girls’ Association (Miss Carrick and Mrs Day), Tahuna Women’s Institute (Mrs I.eighs and Mrs Luck). A very happy evening was spent in dancing, Mr Coxhill acting as M.C. During the evening items were given by the following: Solos, Mrs Ferry (New Plymouth); tap dancing, Miss McKenzie and Miss Joy C.reig; sketch, "Crystal Gazer,” Mrs Hastie and Mrs Goldfinch; club swinging, Mrs Hynes (Auckland); and members of the Auckland Happiness Club Choir gave a very effective rendering of ‘‘Till the Lights of London Shine Joan introduced the new executive, ; ar.d presented the retiring president : I with a bouquet. Mrs Benjamin then | presented Mrs Annear, Mrs Clements ! and Mrs Froggatt each with a gift from | the members, in appreciation of their , | work during the past year. 1 After supper the highlight of the ■ evening was the cutting of the birthday ■ cake which was beautifully decorated ! I with flowers and blue birds and had been donated by Mr and Mrs Morgan. : 1 The candle was lit by Mrs Morgan, ! j wishing the club success for the comj ing year, and was blown out by Mrs ! I Annear. Joan then cut the cake, all 1 ! singing “Happy Birthday.” Miss Suth- [ or land was presented with a small , cake which was a copy of the birthday ; cake. The evening concluded with the ’ j singing of “Auld Lang Syne” and “God [ i Save the King.” VISITORS ENTERTAINED On Sunday morning about 100 memi bers of the Happiness Club attended a ■ church parade at the Cathedral, and in f ne afternoon the Auckland members 1 v/ere driven through the apple or- ’ chards, where they were the guests of ■ Mrs Stoke!!, Upper Moutere. [ On Monday morning the visitors were entertained by the Mayor and Mayoress [ (Mr and Mrs E. R. Neale) in the ’ beautiful grounds of their residence, “Green Gables.” Morning tea was ser1' ved on the spacious lawn and the gar- » den looked very gay with beautiful flowers and coloured umbrellas on the ' lawn. • In the afternoon three buses took the visitors and Nelson members to the Children’s Health Camp, where a very happy afternoon was spent inspecting r the buildings and grounds, t At night a large crowd gathered at j the wharf to farewell Joan and the Auckland visitors.
