OBITUARY
MR G. J. W. BOUNDY One of Motueka’s best known residents, and a journalist of long experI ience. Air Gordon James Waters I Boundy passed away on Wednesday at Nelson, after a short illness at the age of 58. Mr Boundy, who was born in Blenheim in 1883, was a son of the late Air and Airs J. H. Boundy, and a grandson of the late Captain Cross, who was a member of the first expedition to Nelson under Captain Arthur Wakefield. After spending several years in Nelson, where he became a prominent footballer. Air Boundy went to Motueka with his parents, and assisted his father who was proprietor of the “Motueka Star.” At the death of Air Boundy senior, about 35 years j ago, the responsibility of carrying on I the newspaper was taken over by his son, who remained in business until recent years when the “Motueka Star" j was acquired by the ATotucka Star Pub. | lishing Company, later known as the' “Motueka Star-Times.” With these firms Air Boundy occupied the position of Chief Reporter. For a period he; acted us the “Evening Alail’s” Takaka representative. In his younger days Air Boundy was keenly interested in sport, especially football and cricket, and for a number of years was a prominent member of the Alotuoka Rugby Union. He was a foundation member of the Motueka Debating Society, and besides! being a good speaker and debater was | an undoubted humorist. His ready wit, made him always welcome and popular at social functions. Mr Boundy was also keenly interest [ ed in the affairs of the Alotueka School ! and served on the committee for a long; period including a term as chairman. ! During the last 35 years he held the ; position of Returning Officer for the! Alotueka Electorate. He also found!' time to take part in territorial train- ‘ ing, and for some years held the rank . of lieutenant. Air Boundy was a foundation mem-j , ber of the Druids’ Lodge, Motueka, I and a member of the Alasonic Lodge, j I being its Worshipful Master in the year! i j 1911-12. i Air Boundy is survived by his wife,: | a daughter, Airs Malcolm Munro, Blcn- * jheim; and a son, Air Hugh Boundy, : R.N.Z.A.F., Levin. Mesdamcs W. j ; Boyes, Alotueka; and W. J. Smith, j Umukuri, are sisters of deceased, and j Air Eric Boundy, Nelson, a brother The funeral, which took place at the Alotueka Cemetery yesterday alter- > noon, was largely attended particularly 1 by brethren of the Alasonic Lodge. The Rev. W. Beaumont officiated at the graveside and Wor. Bro. G. H. Budden read the Masonic service. The many beautiful floral tributes placed upon the grave demonstrated the high esteem in which the late ATr Boundy; was held in the district. The pall bearers were Messrs C. N. j 1 V. Knapp. J. P.
