LICENSING LAWS
FINES FOR BREACHES The licensee of the Bright water Hotel. Henry Cowdry, was charged in the Magistrate's Court this morning with exposing liquor for sale during a time when the premises were required to be closed. Accused, who pleaded not guilty, was represented by Mr H. G. Brodie, who explained that the licensee had had to go out on Lite night in question to a meeting and had not had time to wash a number of glasses which were in the bar. Ilr had told his wife to do this. She left the slide open and four men came into the bar. They were not served. Senior-Sergeant C. Petersen said the while a constable was knocking at the front door four men who were in the bar tried to break out through the bar door, but three of them were caught. The licensee had not previously been before the Court. The Magistrate: "All the same, if a man is caught once there are a good many times when he is not caught.” Accused was convicted and fined £3, costs 12s. Three first offenders found on licensed premises were each fined £l, costs 12s. Three first offenders found at the Foxhill Hotel when the hotel was required to be closed were each convicted. Two were fined 10s, costs 12s, and one costs only, 12s.
