TASMAN NATIONAL PARK PROPOSAL H 1,1. SUPPORT OFFERED I At the monthly meeting of the ;Takaka Town Board held in the County Chambers on Tuesday night. Mr N. L. Bcnsemann presided and there were ialso present Messrs K. Page. L. Pollard, E. A. Polglase, and G. E. Boyes (clerk >. |Mr E. C. Wadsworth was granted leave ■ of absence. ! Accounts totalling £77 15s Rd were passed fur payment. RUB-DIVISION i Mr C. M. Hoult, surveyor. Nelson, (forwarded a sketch of portion of the j proposed sub-division of A. Emms’l estate The sub-division, it was stated, ; had been held up since April. 1936, and jit was now proposed to complete it. Ati J the time the board had agreed to an Bft strip being dedicated on the south side lof the road on the northern boundary of the sub-division (Hiawatha Lane) j for road widening purposes. The board j was asked to indicate whether it was [still satisfied with the proposed dedij cation. ! It was resolved, on the motion of j Messrs Page and Polglase, to reply [stating that the board was satisfied j with the dedication of an Bft strip for road widening in connection with the I proposed sub-division. The clerk's action in ordering an ad ditional 400 ft of fire hose was endorsed. The Marlborough County Council wrote forwarding a statement showing the apportionment of heavy traffic license fees received for the year ended 31st May. 1941, by local authorities in Heavy Traffic District No. 11. The amount due to the Takaka Town Board was £56 Bs. NATIONAL PARK Mrs P. Moncrieff, of Nelson, forward- '■ ed for the board’s perusal a map and . details of the proposal to request the ! Government to declare a national park- i an area of 38,819 acres in the Totaranui-Awaroa locality under the title of Tasman National Park. As next year was the centenary of Nelson and the 300th anniversary of Tasman’s advent to these coasts, it appeared a suitable time to make such a request. ; The idea was to ask for this area as a national playground for the district, which would add to the assets the dis trict already had in the popular Pohara and Kaiteriteri beaches, and the yachting grounds of the bay and the beautiful coastal scenery. As the board would doubtless desire to associate itself with the request, the writer asked that it nominate one of its members tj join in the movement on the board’s behalf. Replying to a question, the chairman said that the whole of the area included in the proposal was Crown land. Mr Pollard considered it would be an excellent plan to take the land for a : national park as suggested before fire : and felling of ihe bush detracted from ■ its scenic attractions. I The outcome of a brief discussion was a resolution moved by Mr Page and I seconded by Mr Pollard, “that this 1 board fully support the proposal to rej quest the Government to declare as a : national park the area referred to in j the letter from Mrs Moncrieff and that i the chairman represent the Town ’Board in the negotiations.” STOCK TETHERED ON ROAD i The ranger (Mr F. G. Rose) reportled having impounded four head of ’Stock during the past three months. He ; asked to be advised of the board’s j wishes regarding stock tethered on | road-sides in the Town Area, i On the proposition of the chairman jam. Mr Pollard, it was decided to | authorise the ranger to take proceed- ; ings against owners of stock found j tethered on the road sides. GENERAL BUSINESS The chairman and clerk were j authorised to go into the matter oi i procuring a suitable pump for the ! fire engine. | Dissatisfaction with the quality of street lighting the board was receiving 'under the lighting restrictions was' ; again expressed by several members. ; After some discussion, it was re- ! solved, on the motion of Messrs Page [and Pollard, that the chairman apI proach the Power Board and ask it to . favourably consider reducing the cost ; of street lighting to the board in view of the less efficient lighting being received as a result of the restrictions. Mr Polglase said it had been mentioned to him that it might be worth while making the embankment alongside the low portion of the road near : the private hospital wide enough for motor vehicles, the idea being that, if • this were done, traffic would not be J held up at that point during floods. The chairman expressed the opinion I that the inconvenience caused during 'floods was not very great. The sugi gestion was really one for the Highways ; Board and as that body war- working ion a bare maintenance programme this . year, he thought it an inopportune time i for the Town Board to make any move |in the matter. In any case, the Highways Board was more likely to con , | sider raising the level of the whole j road, as was being done at present on . j the low part of the road near Mr | Wallace Page's. RELIEF FUND ■! The board afterwards sat a; the Takaka Relief Fund Committee. Messrs Hammond and McArthur. ■ i Ltd., Wellington, forwarded a cheque; , I for £7. being part profits of tna "One, ! For Fun” Art Union, the money to be . ' applied to the relief of distress g"ad-; j uf l]y.
